DETAILS OF ACCOMMODATION

Ambrosia was formerly a winery and the owners have created a very special house out of a very large space. The property is located at the end of a cul-de-sac near the Canal de la Robine, and just five minutes walk from the centre of Narbonne.

Walk through the front door and you'll be immediately impressed by the spacious main room with the shimmering swimming pool at the centre. The entrance lobby has space for coats and to the right you step into the informal dining area, which leads on to the kitchen - a perfect space for keeping the cook company whilst keeping out of the way.

The kitchen is well equipped with appliances (American fridge/freezer with ice maker, gas cooker, electric oven, butcher's block, dishwasher, microwave oven, electric coffee maker, toaster and kettle) as well as cookware, crockery and dishes. Behind the kitchen is a utility room with washing machine, iron and ironing board, and plenty of space for storage.

Back out to the main space you pass the bar on your right where you'll also find a telephone. The atrium behind the bar is planted with evergreen ferns and palms.

On from the bar is an informal sitting area, a good spot for relaxing with a drink or book on a rainy day.

Behind the sitting area is the main salon with very comfortable sofas, beautiful built-in bookcases and a coffee table which holds the owner's collection of shells, collected from all corners of the world.

The home cinema in this room is equipped with a large flat screen television (117cm), DVD player, VCR and satellite receiver.

Along side the pool (but raised up from the decking surrounding the pool and separated by a wall and lush planting) is the formal dining area. Its large dining table seats eight comfortably and antique furniture and eclectic decoration make this a sumptuous space.

The swimming pool at the centre of the house is 8 x 3.5mts in size, with Roman steps at one end and an overall depth of 1.5mts. The deck around two sides of the pool is a step lower than the rest of the floor and the pool is separated by a fence and gate from the rest of the house for safety (obligatory in France since January 2005).

At the far end of the pool is a veranda, which looks out to the garden. Comfortably furnished with sofa and easy chairs this is an ideal spot from which to survey the swimmers. From the veranda you have access to the spa room with shower, hot tub (jacuzzi) and reclining chairs. From the veranda and the spa rooms sliding doors give access to the garden.

On the first floor a gallery runs along two sides from where you have access to the bedrooms.

Bedroom 1 is furnished with a double bed and wardrobe.

Bedroom 2 is furnished with two single beds, built in closet and chest of drawers and has an en-suite shower room with walk-in shower and basin.

Bedroom 3 is again furnished with a double bed and a door from this room leads to the main bathroom, with bathtub and twin wash basins. This bathroom can also be accessed independently from the gallery.

Bedroom 4 is furnished with a double bed, built in wardrobe, chest of drawers and has an en suite shower room with walk in shower and basin. There is also a separate WC and at the end of the gallery is a study, a quiet corner overlooking the pool area, furnished with a desk. There's also a second telephone here.

Gardens and terraces

The mature and private gardens are planted with trees and Mediterranean plants and well furnished with sun loungers and patio furniture.

The Mediterranean theme is also extended to the summer dining room, using middle eastern tiles, lanterns and ironwork. At one end is a built in BBQ, with a tiled work top and wash basin next to it. There's an attractive tiled fountain along the wall and further long there is built in seating. Several terraces throughout the garden allow everyone to find their own favourite spot.

NARBONNE

Ambrosia is just a five minute walk from the centre of Narbonne with its wonderful main square, where you can walk on an excavated section of the Via Domitia. The ornate town hall is also host to two museums, and the unfinished cathedral is just behind. Cafes and shops surround the square on three sides, perfect for enjoying a cafe au lait and watching people go by! The canal de la Robine connects the sea to the Canal du Midi and runs through the centre of Narbonne - watch the boats go by or hire a small boat for a couple of hours and explore.

Go to the main square in Narbonne, where you can walk on the original stones of the "Via Domita" a major roman road, that ran through the city. Narbonne was the principal Roman city of the area, and remains can be seen in the Horreum, a now underground warehouse, found in the old town.

Overlooking the main square is the Archbishop's palace, part museum, part administrative centre, which links to the Cathedral, astounding in its size and grandeur (there are often concerts to see).

The Cathedral overlooks the Canal de la Robine, which links the Canal du Midi with the Mediterranean, and boats are available for hire for day trips. Also near is a very good and colorful Halles - covered market, which expands on Thursday and Sunday mornings to a colourful market along both sides of the canal.

There are numerous restaurants, bars, clubs in the town, offering a wide variety of choices. There is a large sports center with olympic size swimming pool, and water slides; a skating rink, and bowling alley, all accessed by a restaurant popular with children.

DESCRIPTION OF THE SURROUNDING AREA

Just 15 minutes away are the endless sandy beaches of Narbonne Plage, Gruissan, St Pierre sur Mer; as well as the wild good walking country of La Clape.

To the north and south are the vineyard covered hills of the Minervois, St Chinian, and Corbieres, with jewels of villages including Minerve, astride 2 deep gorges, and site of a Cathar tragedy; St Chinian with tasty wines, lively Sunday market, and base for trips to Gorge d'Heric, Olargues, Roquebrun (ideal base for canoeing); Lagrasse, with abbey, artist studios and galleries; Fontfroide Abbey with rose garden, fine restaurant: Peyrepertuse, and Queribus two cathar castles that sit on the top of mountains.

To the west is splendid Carcassonne, with its Medieval walled cité, and fabulous fireworks and music festival over the summer months. To the south along the coast, is Bages, a pretty village on a small hill overlooking the etang with fine views of Narbonne; Salses, with sunken castle; Collioure, artists gem, under the foothills of the Pyrenees; and Banyuls with its underwater footpath.

ACCESS

International airports are within easy driving distance - Carcassonne (35 mins), Perpignan (30 mins), Montpellier (50 mins), Girona-Barcelona (90 mins). The Narbonne railway station is 8 minutes walk and has TGV direct connections to Paris. There is easy access by motorway A9 or A62/61 to Narbonne.
