Real, Ramblas, Barcelona Enjoy the spirit of Barcelona, in this designer's apartment, in a building dating back to a monastery in the 13th century, with splendid views of the rooftops of Barcelona, a large terrace above the apartment (accessed from the center staircase). Ceilings are high and the rooms are light, large and spacious. From the main entrance on the Plaza Real; stairs or elevator take one to the roof top apartment. Opening the front door, one enters a small entry hall, with a door leading to Apartment 1 (locked - unless two apartments rented together), a window overlooking the central patio or light well, and 2 large glass doors, that open into the main living/dining area, with American style kitchen to one side, with dishwasher, refrigerator, oven/cooker. Immediately opposite is a circular dining table, next to 2 large windows, that look over the city at the back of the building. To the center of the right wall is the pretty fireplace (see photo), with armchairs and sofa, and TV around. To the back right, seperated by a curtain, is a double bed. Adjoining to the living dining area is the master bedroom with double bed, with connecting door to ensuite bathroom (which also has a door to the living area), with bath, washbasin, washing machine, and in a seperate room - WC and shower. From the central stairway steps lead to a roof terrace which can be used for sunbathing or dining.
Plaza Real is just off the Rambla, a busy treelined pedestrian street busy with street musicians, performers and selling everythings from tourist trinkets to the latest in plastic fashions! Visit the bird market near the arts and information center at Palau de la Virreina. Near to is the ever busy Mercat de la Boqeria - a colorful market well worth a visit. Not far the Ramblas meets the sea with the Monument to Colombus. In this port area is the Maritime Museum (Museu Maritim) - full of a wealth of history relating to Spanish adventurers and global exploration. Taking a walk in the opposite direction to the Ramblas, one finds oneself in medieval Barcelona - the Barri Gotic - a concentration of gothic buildings, connected by narrow streets, squares, with many restaurants, bars, cafés, which has as its center the magnificent Gothic Cathedral, and close to it the Placa de Sant Jaume - with busy market - and a venue for sardana dancing. Other places that must be visited, (amongst so many) are the Picasso Museum on the Carrer de Montcada - with a fine selection of his earlier years including the blue period. The Joan Miro museum and art gallery with the largest collection by this great Catalan artist. And to crown all - visit the La Sagrada Familia - the fantastic almost finished cathedral by Antoni Gaudi. ACCESS Barcelona International airport is 12 kms from the center - and is easily reached by car, or underground trains (that stop near Plaza Real). Barcelona is 3 hours from Perpignan (airport). ![]() ![]() Picasso Museum and right = Terrace view at night of Plaza Real |
