TOURBES, PEZENAS AND SURROUNDING AREA
Tourbes is a working village - in contrast to many of the surrounding
villages where holiday homes outnumber local residents.
The majority
of the population is involved in the main local industry, wine
making, and Tourbes Cave Co-operative has a very good reputation.
There
is a very friendly baker and butcher, with a general store/tobacconists
and newsagents (selling UK papers only a day late), a boulangerie
(closed on Mondays), butcher and chemist, with other needs supplied
by a weekly mini-market on Wednesday where you will find a greengrocer
and fishmonger.
The supermarkets of Pezenas are only 5 minutes
away
by car.
A couple of minutes walk from the house are 2 parks, one with
swings and climbing frame.
Access to the local tennis courts can be had by paying a small
fee and deposit for a key at the chemists shop.
Less than 5 minutes drive is
Pézenas renowned for its connections with Moliere, when the town
hosted a number of theaters for the royalty of France. These days have
passed, leaving behind magnificent houses, and narrow historic streets
that vibrate with art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, wine bars, and
cafés.
Pezenas is also known as a place to buy antiques, in one of the number
of antique shops, or markets; as well its renowned for an especially
colourful Saturday market along the length
of the town's
central road - Rue Jean Jaurès - where everything from local produce,
to clothes, bric-a-brac, exotic items, can be found.
SURROUNDING AREA
Less
than 20
minutes away are the charming fishing villages of Mèze and Marseillan.
Mèze, has many fine restaurants around the picturesque quays filled
with fishing boats, and Marseillan, also boast fine restaurants, as well
as guided tours and degustation at Noilly Prat which is produced there.
In
20 minutes you can be bathing on the Mediterranean on one of the many
sandy beaches stretching from Vias Plage to Cap d'Agde to Sète.
For those that want cosmopolitan excitement - Montpellier boasts fine
art
galleries,
concerts, theaters, restaurants, with a youthful vigour helped by a
large
university and some spectacular modern architecture. Or
closer you can visit Beziers, with its magnificent Cathedral, the architectural
engineering of 9 lock on the Canal du Midi, and its famous Feria in
the Summer months.
You will find Belle Vie, an ideal center to explore Languedoc - as
you are well placed to visit for day outings such marvels as the Pont
du Gard; the Medieval Cité and Castle at Carcassonne; the Pope's
palace at Avignon; the Lavender fields of Provence; the white horses
of the Camargue; even going south via Perpignan, to flamboyant Spain,
with Dali's museum at Figueres, and home at Cadaques, an idyllic fishing
and artist centre surrounded by a rugged natural park.
ACCESS
Montpellier (40mins) is the nearest International airport with
regular daily flights. Alternatives are Beziers (20mins), Nimes
(40mins), Carcassonne (65 mins),
Perpignan (60 mins), and in Spain Gerona-Barcelona (120 mins).
All
the airports have car hire available. If travelling
by train, there are railway stations at Beziers and Agde, which
also have car rental offices close by. Pézenas
is served by a major bus terminus.
The motorway auto route road system of France is easilly to access from
the house, as both the A75 that goes through the center of France from
Paris (via Clermont Ferrand, and the famous Millau bridge) and the A9
that goes to Spain, via Perpignan, and connects with the A7 that follows
the Rhone valley, have exits close to Pezenas.
