Boats available for rental
Enjoy
taking your canal or cruise boat rental on the Canal des Houilleres
de la Sarre and the Marne to Rhine Canal from Mittersheim, 22 kms
from Sarreboug (SNCF railway station; if you have time see the Marc
Chagall largest stainglass window at Chapel de Cordeliers) and then
60 mins from Strasbourg. Explore this
incredibly
historical, natural, and gastronomically rich area, with many canal
side villages with their restaurants, markets, and unique histories.
Take the lovely
Canal des Houilleres
de la Sarre passsing through the lovely Parc Regional
de Lorraine, with beautiful lakes, fishing, wild life, to the villages
of Sarralbe that was fortified in the 12th century, to Sarreguemines,
busy trading center with its world
famous faience and museum.
Follow the Canal de la Marne au Rhin via the pretty villages of Gondrexange
(fishing), Einville au Jard (home to the dukes of Lorraine and see
Les Salines where they mine rock salt), to Nancy. Nancy has a magnificent
main square (UNESCO lauded) - Place Stanislas (named after a King
of Poland who made Nancy his home), wonderful art nouveau in architecture
and
glass
- go to the Musee de l'ecole de Nancy) and Villa
Majorelle.
Go all the way to Strasbourg almost to the Rhine. Pass through Niderviller,
and see its famous pottery looking at ceramics on show. Then taking
tunnels under the Vosges mountains, experience the Saint Louis Arzviller
boat lift "Le
plan incliné", sliding
down or up the side of hill (nearly 150 feet), which replaced 17
locks in 1969. Afterwards visit Lutzelbourg, with a picturesque ruined
chateau on the hill above. Then onto Saverne with its red sandstone
chateau - the Alsace Versailles - Chateau de Rohan - which even stunned
Goethe! Getting thirsty? The next village of Hochvelden was brewing
beer in 870 AD - and you can participate in the tradition by visiting
the brewery of Meteor Beer. The canal continues through beautiful
country and canal villages to Strasbourg with its modern European
Parliament buildings, its "Petite France" riverside district, and
the grand Notre Dame Cathedral with an enchanting spire.
