St Guilhem at night

Narrow Street, St Guilhem-le-Désert, Hérault.

Walking down this deserted street late at night, I seemed to be transported back to medieval times - little has changed. The rain started to fall, and with water coming out of wells, and down the stream that runs through the center of this village, the sense of peace and beauty was idyllic. A visit to the lovely abbey church (13th Century) or up into the hills that hang overhead, with a particularly dramatic ruined castle are recommended

Bench between trees

Town Bench, near Abbey church in town of Quarante, Hérault.

Sunday afternoons are perfect for wandering around villages, - everything is quiet, - everyone relaxing after the big meal or watching sports on TV. There is a beautiful abbey church to the right of this bench, built between 982 and 1053.
