ABOUT ST THIBERY AND SURROUNDINGS St Thibery dates back to Roman times, when it straddled the Via Domitania, the main road from Rome to Spain. Today the A9 autoroute is only 2 miles away (Agde exit) so the village is very handy for the 21 st century international road network, while lying off main roads, and therefore retaining its village identity. ![]() St Thibery The village itself provides for most everyday requirements with a weekly market, 2 bakeries, newsagent, vegetable shop, butchers, fish shop, small supermarket,2 bars and there is a well-stocked supermarket 2 miles down the road. Because of the proximity of the A9, St Thibery makes an ideal base for exploration, from Figueres in Spain (about 2 hours), home of the world-famous Dali museum, the mediaeval walled city of Carcassonne (1 hour); to cities of Nimes and Arles and the magnificent Port du Gard (1-1 1/2 hours). Much less known is the unspoilt mediaeval town of Aigues Mortes (1 hour) and is a must. But there is plenty to see much nearer home, too! The delights of St Thibery include the mediaeval bridge just a step from the house, the remains of the Pont Romain, which carried the Via Domitia over the river Herault, the abbey church, and the impressive natural basalt formation known as "the Organ Pipes". Within easy driving distance there is a vast length of clean, safe child-friendly beach stretching all the way from Sete to Agde, which, even in August does not get overcrowded. Additionally, there are numerous nearby coastal resorts and fishing villages offering a wide range of seaside facilities and nightlife. Only 5 minutes away is the elegant town of Pezenas, home of the playwright Moliere and Louise XIV's court in the Languedoc. The rolling acres of vines betray that we are in the heart of wine country. It would be invidious to name names, but most of the local domains keep open house for free tasting! The foodie will not be disappointed, either. From simple seafood dishes on the coast to gastronomic feasts in little restaurants hidden away in castles, there is something for every taste and pocket. The historic Cathar stronghold of Beziers is within 20 minutes drive. This is the spiritual home of Rugby in France and also hosts a famous Feria in August. Half an hour to the East is the vibrant university town of Montpellier with plenty of artistic, musical and theatrical activity and endless scope for the shopaholic. ACCESS International airports at Montpellier ( 35 min ) BA. Airfrance, . Nimes (I hour ) Ryanair. Carcassonne ( 50 min ) Ryanair. Perpignan ( 1 hour ) Ryanair. Toulouse (2 1/2 hours) Airfrance, Luffhansa, KLM, BA, Crossair). Barcelona , Spain (3 1/2 hours) International and transatlantic flights. There are also several nearby railway stations served by TGV |
