canigou and the pyrenees, seen from minervois, languedoc

View towards Canigou, from the Minervois hills near Minerve, Languedoc as night creeps in

The view is south across the Aude river valley, over the Corbieres hills. Canigou, once thought of as a Magnolia flower by catalan poet Jacint Verdaguer, is especially celebrated with a huge bonfire on its peak each year on June 23, the day before St John's day. It is a symbol of Catalonia, and it is said on that night, 30 000 bonfires burn throughout Catalonia to herald their culture, and their identity.
