Avignon: Notre
Dame des Doms, & Papal Palace
"Sur le pont Avignon!"

Avignon, once the French Vatican, and home to the Popes, Vaucluse, South of France
One of the must places to visit in the South of France is Avignon
- once home to the Popes, who prefered to stay in France
than in Italy! There is an excellent theatre festival - and
the town is wonderful for walking around, shops, restaurants,
and visiting numerous historic buildings.
Go to the Papal
Palace, climb the hill and park next to Notre Dame des Doms
- where
there is a little café restaurant, and pond to relax under
the shade of old trees, that seem miraculously to have survived
the strong winds of this part of France. From this park there
are good views of the famous bridge in Avignon which spawned
the song "Sur le pont Avignon".
