Canal du Midi, Capestang
For some of the larger canal boats it can be a bit of a squeeze through some of the beautiful bridges that cross the Canal du Midi. Here in Capestang, one visit the delightful fortified church and sit out in the square, under the shade of trees, whilst buyers and sellers work the market

Collioure, Artists Paradise, near Perpignan, Languedoc
South France Guide Photo of the Week - October 12 1997
Driving
down into Collioure, one is mesmerized by the blue Mediterranean,
and color of houses and water. Here one catches the fever that caught
the artists Matisse, and Derain, where the blissful light picks up
the color of houses, the castle, the church (with its stupendous altar),
people eating at restaurants, and the boats and swimmers bobbing up
and down as the waves break onto the beach

Marble Quarries at Caunes Minervois
South France Guide Photo of the Week - October 20 1997
Start your
walk from the hermitage of Notre Dame de Cros, Caunes-Minervois -
a perfect place for a picnic, on ready set up tables, under the shade
of trees. Then climb through the woods, look to your left at the climbers
as they swing at their ropes, go past the house with stables. Follow
the track as it goes past quarries, boasting red and rose marbles
slabs laid out, and climb to the top with a view that spreads out
over the Aude Valley till the Mediterranean. Here by rusting huts,
walk down into this pit of marble cut into the hillside.

Ecluse at Aiguille, near
Puichéric, on the Canal du Midi
South France Guide Photo of the Week - October 27 1997
Art of
the absurd, amusing, and surreal, line the ecluse at Aiguille, near
Puichéric, on the Canal du Midi. The artist, also lock keeper,
has put his hand to almost every spare piece of wood lining the canal.
Here a man salut's with his wine, and on the opposite side of
the canal, a dog eternally pees into a stream. A Mannekin-pis of Brussels
fame in the style of the Midi.
